November 26: After Whale Watching season ending in Vancouver end of October i was feeling a lack of whales in my life so decided to go where the whales are by joining Eagle Wing tours for a whale watching trip.
At this time of year they usually advertise this tour as a wildlife tour with the possibility of whale sightings throughout the winter however this year with the abundance of Humpback Whales in the Salish sea they extended their whale guarantee to cover november also.
Now im used to wildlife viewing, you never know what you are going to see on individual days but this day happened to be one of the greatest days out on the water and one i will remember as one of the best.
Not long after leaving Victoria harbour we could see blows in the distance. As we got closer we saw that they were Killer Whales and after a while and closer we could tell that these weren't just any Whales, these were Souther Resident Killer Whales. Spread out in smaller clusters there were some large males that could be identified from a distance such as L87 (Onyx), K21 (Cappuchino), K26 (Lobo) as well as plenty of other whales including L72 (Racer) who has very cool saddle patch markings. After a while and a few of us taking photographs our guides made us aware that we were looking at the Majority of L pod n K pod all together. They spent a while travelling and zig zagging before creating an incredible resting line stretching out before us. Only having had a handful of enounters with the Southern Residents this was the first time i had seen these amazing animals all spread out, diving and resting in Unison.
With only 73 Southern Resident whales remaining seeing so many from 2 of the 3 different pods (J,K,L pods) was incredible and our luck on that particular day could not have been any better. To top the trip off we also saw a total of 10 humpback whales as well as hundreds of sea lions at Race Rocks.
